Everybody thinks that generic drugs are available in market at lower cost because of the inferior quality and different ingredients. People don’t purchase the generic drugs because of the same reason. But reality is different, generic Drugs are not only good in quality but are also reasonably cheaper in cost. I would say, people are depriving themselves from best quality generic drugs an inexpensive option due to their lack of knowledge. But, I will try to make it clear that generic drugs are absolutely safe for the use.
Generic Drugs are the exact copy of the original branded drugs. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has made certain rules and regulations that generic drugs manufacturer, if he has to bring the generic version of the any brand name drug in the market. The first and most important rule made by FDA is that generic drug must have the same strength and the same dosage form and must be administered in the same way as the original branded drug. Generic Drug manufacturer has to prove to the FDA that its product is bioequivalent in properties and effects to its brand name drug. In simple words, generic drug manufacturer has to prove that the drug performs in the same manner as the original branded drug.
Another condition put by FDA is the test of bioequivalence. In this test time taken by the active ingredient in the drug to reach the bloodstream and its concentration in the bloodstream in 24 to 36 healthy volunteers is measured. This test gives the idea about the rate and extent of the generic drug’s absorption in the body. Then these characteristics are compared with those of the original branded drug. If these characteristics match then the generic drug gets the license for the sale in the market.
One more belief is very prominent among the people that brand name drugs are superior. But the truth is different, generic drugs are similar ineffectiveness in comparison to their brand name counterparts. Generic Drugs follow the same manufacturing standards followed by original branded drug. Generic drugs are inexpensive as compared with the brand name drug because of the lower operating cost of generic drug manufacturers and competition in companies. Generic Drug if sold under the same name of the branded drug gets the benefits of advertising and marketing done by the branded drug manufacturer. Generic drug manufacturers’ money is saved because they want to copy the same formulation of the original branded drug. Thus, the money required for research and clinical trails is saved.
So it is clear that generic drugs equal to the branded drug in quality and effectuality. The only difference is in color and structure. This difference is because FDA doesn’t allow the generic version to be a look alike of the branded one. And the other difference is what it makes to your pocket because generic drugs are very cheap than the original branded drug.
